What is Whey Protein?

Whey protein is a concentrated form of protein derived from animals. Animal-based proteins are usually composed of two milk proteins: whey and casein.

Plant-based proteins are made after blending protein-containing plant seeds, usually pees, nuts, soy, etc.

  • Body Requirements;

Whey protein is primarily used to build muscles. However, it can also be used to treat certain medical conditions.

-As per DRI, the standard protein requirement is 0.8gm/kg/day

-For Body Building, the requirement may be up to 2gm/kg/day

-A scoop generally contains 20-30gm of protein.

Can we take Whey Protein without any indication? The answer is yes, but only with the advice of a healthcare professional. Without any indication, it can only be taken up to certain limits.

They can be beneficial in;

  • Bodybuilding
  • Improving physical stamina
  • Weight loss(if used in low quantity. 1vs2 scoop theory explains it)

Treatment of medical conditions;

  • Cachexia
  • Cancer
  • Protein Energy malnutrition
  • Chronic diseases like Hepatitis and HIV.

Side Effects of Whey Proteins:

1. Gastric Distress:

Whey protein can lead to gastric distress if taken in higher quantities. Prolonged use may result in acne, bloating, tiredness, and headache.

People who have Celiac disease and Lactose intolerance should avoid using animal-based protein.

Myths:

There are a lot of myths regarding the use of protein supplements. One of the famous myths is kidney and liver failure.

There is no scientific evidence of kidney and liver failure. However, such conditions may occur due to toxic addons present in the powder.

Any previous comorbidity, i.e., CKD, may lead to kidney failure, so such patients should avoid it.

Another myth is the effect on bone growth. There is a misconception that whey proteins decrease the bone density. Again, no evidence supports its benefit in Osteoporosis or leading to reduced bone density.

Can Children also use Whey Protein?

These proteins can be given to children but not to infants or neonates. Dosage should be strictly followed, as children’s digestive systems are more sensitive.

Keeping in view the Digestive distress caused by Whey protein, the recommendation is to give natural protein sources;

  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Dairy products
  • Meat

Dietary consultation with a registered physician is essential for a baby who is suffering from PEM.

 

How to purchase a Quality Whey Protein?

Whey protein is costly and should be purchased after a satisfactory inspection of its manufacturing and quality certifications.

  • Read the Ingredients;

Make sure it is Gluten-free.

  • Quality Certification;

It should be certified as Halal. Other third-party certifications include ConsumerLab, Informed Choice, USP, Banned Substance Control Group,  and NSF International’s Certified for Sport.

  • Serving Size;

It should be 20-30mg/scoop.

Whey Protein is common nowadays because of its primary use in the gym industry. In the past, people were physically fitter because of the physical exertion they put into their daily chores.

Keeping oneself physically fit should be the goal, either using old ways or Whey protein.

These proteins are not as lethal as it is considered in our layman’s society. Its positive use awareness campaign is essential.

Gyms have become fitness centers in modern lifestyles. Some people consider going to the gym impossible without Whey protein. Myths are the other obstacles to using supplements.
