Physiology of "Electron Uptake" while Walking Barefoot:
It is a well-established fact that the Earth’s surface has an abundant supply of electrons, and atmospheric aero-electrical currents continuously replenish them.
Our compartments and cells are the volume conductors, and they conduct charges. A hypothesis also reveals that the Earth’s electrons regulate some circadian rhythms. (1)
Regulation of cortisol diurnal rhythm is one of the examples. Creating an electron-conducting pathway by walking barefoot, placing electrodes, or using conducting mattresses will assist in regulating these rhythms.

Anti-Inflammatory Role of Electrons:
H. Selye, a pioneer in the 1950s, explained the cortisol-inflammation relationship. Cortisol is released in response to stress, and inflammation is thought to be the mother of all chronic diseases. Walking barefoot allows electrons to maintain a diurnal cortisol rhythm. (2,3)
Another hypothesis reveals that our body acts as a reservoir of charges that maintain homeostasis and are involved in “inflammation preparedness”. (4)
Walking Barefoot and Body Recovery:
In a study, an 84-year-old diabetic female had an 8-month-old non-healing wound, which was recovered in 2 weeks, only 30 minutes of daily sessions of grounding.
In another study, a cyclist suffered a chain wheel injury. After daily grounding sessions, his inflammation miraculously subsided on the third day after the injury.
Walking barefoot will also repair ongoing minor injuries and inflammation in human body.
Explore more about these studies. (5)
Stress Mitigation:
A study was conducted to understand the physiology behind stress mitigation through grounding. The experimental group was grounded in this study, and the control group was ‘sham grounded’.
Results were interpreted using the SSVP(Single Square Voltage Pulse) method. After the study, the experimental group experienced less stress than the control group. (6,7)
Boosting Cognitive Health and Immunity:
Earth’s surface has DC(Direct Current). Walking barefoot allows this DC to pass through our bodies. This current plays a critical role in the homeostasis of our charge reservoir. (8)
EEGs conducted on grounded patients showed a shift in brain waves, reducing stress levels. Grounding also improves sleep quality and autonomic functions, keeping mental health optimal. (9,10)
Immunity is improved due to increased immunoglobulins and WBCs.(11)
Cardiovascular health is improved due to the neutralization of ROS(Reactive Oxygen Species) and increased vascular flow. Walking barefoot and grounding also improves BMR(Basal Metabolic Rate).(12,13,14)
In a nutshell, grounding/earthing has a lot of positive impact on mental and physical well-being.
Other Benefits of Walking Barefoot:
Walking barefoot is good for you in many ways as it improves;
- Proprioception and sensory experience
- Musculoskeletal strength
- Posture and balance
- Inflammation and reduces pain
